“We deserve a trophy”: Van de Ven says that Spurs are determined to finish the drought Europa League

Micky van de Ven remembers that he would never win a trophy in his career after moving to Tottenham. But the middle, which was signed by Verzecoglou from Wolfsburg in the summer of 2023, says that the collective determination within the club of breaking the silverware curse will boost in the final of the Europa League on Wednesday against Manchester United in Bilbao. Spurs have not won anything since the League Cup 2008.

“It will of course be a big deal, because everyone knows that for the rest of their career they will be trophyless if they join Tottenham when they get the words,” Ah, they will not win trophy, “said van de Ven.” All boys who came here said: ‘We will change something about this club.’

“It was the gaffer and it was the whole squad that said:” We will come here and change something. “It is now the task for us to achieve this in Bilbao.”

Van de Ven was asked who had told him that he would never win anything after going to Spurs. “These people are on social media, do you know?” The 24-year-old replied. “These jokers who don’t really take them seriously. It didn’t play me in my head, not even a little.”

The Dutch defender is one of the many players who continue to fight for Postecoglou, who, after 21 league defeats this season, is on the verge of his job most of the history of a 38-game campaign.

“We have all been behind the gaffer since the first day since he joined here,” said Van de Ven. “He showed his quality, he brought us to a European final. Of course he gets a lot of doubts about the media and we see these things. But I think he has proven everything that was wrong and we are in a European finals, so we can lift the trophy not only for us, but also for him.

“We all know that we play for a large club. This association deserves trophies. That is the truth. If you look at the quality in the squad, we deserve a trophy. It was a hard season, but we can end this perfectly by winning a prize.”

Postecoglous Hopes have been fired since Van de Ven and his other defensive selection of the first choice had returned from an injury. The goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and defenders Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Van de Ven and Destiny Udogie have been available since the second leg of the last tie against AZ.

Postecoglou chose Djed Spence via Udogie against AZ, but apart from that, he rely on the quintet on the Route The Finale and rewarded with some secure services, especially in the 1-0 victory at Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals in the second leg, which won a 2-1 win.

Van de Ven’s partnership with Romero in the middle is fundamental. “We just feel in the game,” said van de Ven. “When he does something, I know how to cover it, how I can help him. On the other hand, it is the same – when I have the ball, he knows how to cover me.

“From the beginning I felt a strong connection to him, but the more games they play together, the more they feel mutually and know the properties of the other. It is an incredible connection that I have with him now.”
