The UN Aviation Agency finds Russia, who shot Malaysian Airlines flight over Ukraine in 2014

Russia was responsible for shooting a flight in Malaysian Airlines via Ukraine in 2014, in which all 298 people were killed on board – which became one of the greatest secrets of aviation, the United Nations aviation agency decided.

The Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 was hit by a Russian rocket when he flew from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when Russian separatists fought in the Donbas region.

The UN Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) found on Monday that the Russian Federation had violated the convention known as the Chicago Convention on the International Civil Affairs, in which the countries “do not have to fall back on the use of weapons against civil aircraft in flight”.

Russia has long denied any responsibility for the incident.

The case was brought to the UN in 2022 by the Dutch and Australian governments. Of the almost 300 victims, 196 came from the Netherlands and 38 from Australia, according to the BBC. British, Belgian and Malaysian citizens were also killed.

“We ask Russia to finally face the responsibility for this terrible act of violence and to make reparation for his outrageous behavior”, in a declaration after the coordination in a statement by Australia’s executive Minister Penny Wong.

The verdict – which compensates for the possibility of the family family of the victims, represents the first time in the history of the Icao that a dispute between the governments has been decided.

Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp said that the Netherlands and Australia “request that the ICAO council ask the Russian Federation to conclude negotiations with the Netherlands and Australia and that the Council makes this process easier.”

“The latter is important to ensure that negotiations are carried out in good faith and according to certain schedules and that they provide actual results,” he added.

In 2022, a Dutch court condemned two former Russian intelligence agents and a pro-Russian Ukrainian murder leader because he had helped the delivery of the Russian Buk rocket system with which the plane was shot down.

The three convicted defendants, the Russians Igor Girkin and Sergey Dubinskiy and the Ukrainian separatist Leonid Kharchenko, were put to trial in the absence and sentenced to life imprisonment, but remain at the open foot.
