Paterson Thanksgiving Classic: Eastside and Kennedy High School celebrate Centennial football game in New Jersey

PATERSON, N.J. (WABC) — It’s a tradition that has stood the test of time.

Kennedy High School versus Eastside High School on Thanksgiving.

While many holiday games have disappeared, Kennedy and Eastside continue to play on Türkiye Day. Thursday’s matchup marked the 100th year of competition between the two schools.

“It is a blessing that we are all here to witness this day,” said Issac Wade Jr. “I graduated in 1983 and we had the full force of the band on both sides.”

Despite the dreary weather, fans of both schools are marking their calendars for this special occasion.

“It’s a family affair,” Berth Kelly added.

Dorothy Martin, who first became involved in the game in 1974, just had her 50th high school reunion as an Eastside graduate.

“It’s very important,” she said. “There aren’t that many of us left. I’m so proud and happy and healthy and out here on Thanksgiving Day.”

The competition was once again held at the newly renovated Hinchliffe Stadium, which is Paterson’s pride and joy. The stadium – which once hosted Negro League Baseball – hosted the annual game until it descended into desperation.

But now it has breathed new life into an old rivalry.

“I think the best thing that could have ever been done was to bring this field back to life,” admitted Sayegh. “It put Paterson back in the win column.”

During halftime, a special tribute was given to the former Eastside players who were once at the center of the rivalry.

“Oh, that’s great, man,” Eastside graduate Charles McNeil said. “I didn’t know it would take 100 years to get here. This is great.”

Eastside won this year’s competition, taking home the Mayor’s Trophy and bragging rights.
