Osaka wins Saint Malo 125 titles; Galfi extends the winning streak at VIC 125

At the WTA 125 events this week, the acceptance of a wild card in France worked perfectly for Naomi Osaka, while Dalma Galfi and Bianca Andreescu recorded titles in Spain.

The following took place over the weekend at WTA 125 in the WTA in Clay Court:

Wild Card Osaka records the title Saint Malo

The former Japanese of the World No. 1 in Osaka in Japan collected the first title of her career in WTA 125 on Sunday and defeated Kaja Juvan from Slovenia 6: 1, 7: 5 to win the title L’Upen 35 de Saint Malo in Saint Malo, France.

Of course, Osaka was an important champion in her career and won four Grand Slam titles and three additional titles on the Hologic WTA Tour. But since her last Grand Slam at the Australian Open 2021 she had not won a singles on any level.

All of this changed this week after Osaka had taken a wild card as No. 2 seeds to the event. Osaka dropped one set per piece on French hopes Diane Parry and Leolia Jeanjean, but she sailed smoothly through the draw.

Funny fact: This was not Osaka’s first WTA 125 -final. She took second place at Yaroslava Shvedova at WTA 125 Hua Hin nine and a half years ago.

In the meantime, a short shout-out is going to the former top 100 player Juvan, who ended a 12-month break from the tour in January and has already reached a WTA 125 final.

The title of Saint Malo -Doppel was won by No. 1 Seeds Maia Lumsden and Makoto Ninomiya. They defeated the No. 2 seeds Oksana Kalashnikova and Angelica Moratelli 7: 5, 6-2 in the final on Saturday.

Galfi claims Vic title and winning streak up to 10

Hungary Galfi had never won a WTA 125 title until she had raised the trophy in Oeiras last month. Now she has won two.

On Saturday, Galfi Rebeka Masarova from Switzerland swept 6: 3, 6-0 and won the open title Catalonia Open in Vic, Spain. Galfi is currently in the middle of a winning streak of 10 games.

This was a completely dominant week for the climb of Galfi. During her run, she lost no more than four games in a set during her run.

Galfi, who was a junior in the world No. 1 a decade ago, is probably in the hottest form of her professional career. She was classified in 149th place three weeks ago, but now it is expected to return to the top 100 in the updated PIF WTA ranking on Monday.

In the meantime, an additional Grand Slam champion took a wild card this week and ended it with a title. The US Open Champion 2019 Bianca Andreescu paired with Aldila Sutjiadi to win the Vic Double title.

Andreescu and Sutjiadi defeated Lulu Sun and another Grand Slam finalist, Leylah Fernandez, 6-2, 6: 4 in the Catalonia Open Double Final on Friday.
