Nine migrants detained after the boat was washed in La Jolla – NBC 7 San Diego

A boat with several migrants who washed on the shore near Windansea Beach in La Jolla on Sunday morning.

“My neighbor asked me if I could smell petrol. I said, yes, and I noticed the boat along the reef here,” said Jon Burland, a local surf.

According to the customs and border patrol, the US coast guard discovered the 24-foot boat with Cuddy Cabin style around 5 a.m. They saw several people who rose from the boat and ran to cross Coast BLVD. and Prospect St.

According to the CBP, agents of the Imperial Beach Station reacted and arrested nine migrants who were brought to a nearby border patrol station to be processed for a distance.

“You could smell the gas in the water,” said Burland.

Burland woke up the early Sunday morning to ride a few waves when he noticed a Hazmat team, a border patrol, the police and a lifeguard along the coast.

“It seemed strange that nobody had done anything on the boat because it was hours ago since it happened,” said Burland.

He picked up a drone video when he went over the boat and got a jug of gasoline and a shot battery.

“Yes, it is very sad and it is terrible that people get there and hire people, and luckily nobody was hurt,” said Burland.

The boat was there for hours before it was towed. CBP said the boat was confiscated by Border Patrol.

Hilary Cole went with her dog and found it strange to see an abandoned boat, but she later found out what had happened.

“It only makes me sad for humanity and this world that people feel so unsafe and departed by the conditions in which they have to go through these drastic measures to hopefully have something better,” said Cole.

It is unclear whether more people were on the boat.
