Liberation from Georgetown Scholar, which is detained by ICE – NBC4 Washington

A federal judge ordered the release of Badar Khan Suri, a professor of Georgetown University and Postdoktorand, which was arrested in March by immigration authorities in North Virginia.

The US district judge Patricia Tolliver Giles said on Wednesday that Khan Suri was neither accused of crime. His detention violates his right to initiate freedom of expression and his fifth right of change to a proper procedure, she said.

Khan Suri left later on Wednesday after Giles’ judgment from the Prairieland -High Center in Alvarado, Texas.

“They made me a sub -person.

“I was chained. My ankles, my wrists, my body – everything was chained,” he said.

He said he was looking forward to seeing his wife and children soon.

“We have to be brave in these difficult times,” he said. “If it is tyranny when it comes to totalitarianism, if it is authoritarianism, we have to be brave because it is brave and we can build bridges between different people with courage.”

The Ministry of Homeland Security accused Khan Suri of “actively spreading the Hamas propaganda and promoting anti -Semitism on social media”.

In her decision, Giles said that the government had failed to provide evidence that Khan Suri was a fluid risk or a danger to the community. She added that they also did not provide evidence that Khan Suri would be a national security risk.

Khan Suri’s dismissal was in the interest of the public, as Giles decided because it would disturb the terrifying effect that his detention had on protected political speech.

His wife, Maphaz Ahmad Yousef, said that the judge’s words brought “tears in the eye”, reported NBC News.

“I wish I could hug her from the heart,” said Yousef at a press conference.

Khan Suri has been a postdoc in Georgetown for three years.

Masked agents arrested him in front of his house in Arlington, Virginia on March 19.

The Trump government said that it quickly moved Khan Suri from a facility in Farmville, Virginia, because of overcrowding into a detention center in Louisiana and then to Texas.

Khan Suris’ lawyers had submitted a petition that found whether his detention was lawful, known as Habeas’s Corpus petition.

At the beginning of this month, the lawyers of the USA argued to move Khan Suri’s deportation from Virginia to Texas, and explained that the habeas petition had to be submitted if the petent is held. Giles denied her request and said she was responsible for the Habeas Petition, which questioned his detention.

The lawyers of Khan Suris from the American Civil Liberties Union told the judge that Khan Suri once slept in Texas on the ground of a crowded detention center for at least the first few weeks. However, they said that he now had his own cell in Texas.

More than a hundred students and faculties filled the Red Square of Georgetown University and demanded the publication of their teacher and colleague Badar Khan Suri. News4s’ Drew Wilder explains the details.

His lawyers said the real reason why he was moved to Texas was to bring the case to a more conservative judge. The lawyer Vishal Agraharkar accused the government, which is often referred to as a “forum shopping”.

Khan Suri “has close connections to a well -known or alleged terrorist who is a senior advisor to Hamas,” said DHS spokesman Tricia McLaughlin after his arrest on X.

Yousef, an American citizen who originally comes from Gaza, is also a student in Georgetown. Her father Ahmed Yousef is a former consultant by the now deceased Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. In an interview with the New York Times, Ahmed Yousef said that he left his position more than a decade ago. He was also pronounced in his criticism of Hamas.

The US public prosecutor’s office “respectfully declined a comment” when News4 achieved an explanation. The office did not say whether it could try to take Khan Suri’s release.
