Joliet’s turn signal overtook a school bus and crashed into a parked car: JPD

JOLIET – According to Joliet police, a 24-year-old Joliet man was involved in exposing his private parts, then passing a stopped school bus that was unloading children before crashing into a parked car.

According to Joliet police, Leonardo Gutierrez’s shocking behavior led to his arrest on public indecency charges Tuesday afternoon. Gutierrez’s criminal charge does not constitute a criminal offense under the SAFE-T Act, so he was released on an order to appear in court.

Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English said the following sequence of events led to Gutierrez’s arrest by his department:

At 3:20 p.m., officers responded to the 1000 block of Morgan Street to a report of a man exposing his genitals to citizens in the area. The officer saw Gutierrez on the street. Gutierrez was interviewed by officers and released after no complaining witnesses were found.

Gutierrez left the area in a Hyundai Santa Fe. While an officer was standing behind Gutierrez, he began driving recklessly, passing a school bus that had its stop arm activated and was actively unloading children.

The officer stopped to ensure the safety of the children and Gutierrez fled the area in the vehicle.

A short time later, Gutierrez was driving the Hyundai Santa Fe south on South May Street from Morgan Street and crashed into an unoccupied vehicle parked on the street. Gutierrez then drove away from the scene of the accident without stopping. Gutierrez was located at his home in the 600 block of McDonough Street and taken into custody.

Meanwhile, officers have traced the original complainant in relation to the public indecency complaint. As for Gutierrez, he was also charged with reckless driving, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident in which the vehicle was damaged and passing a school bus.
