IOWA waived the restriction of purchases with SNAP services permitted | Top stories

Des Moines, Iowa (KWWL) -A waiver of the Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services to limit restrictions on the restriction of SNAP services, was approved by the USDA.

The waiver enables IOWA to approve SNAP purchases in a list of foods that are not taxable according to Iowa Law. This includes bread, eggs, meat and fruits.

Some objects that are no longer approved for SNAP are sweets, alcoholic drinks, soda and chewing gum.

You can find a complete list of articles approved and no longer approved with SNAP services on the website of the Iowa Department of Revenue.

“The high obesity rates have brought our nation and our state into a scale,” said Governor Reynolds. “In order to promote healthy eating and to protect future generations from diseases – and to ensure that SNAP fulfills its core function, we need a change.”

“Our adult and childhood diseases and obesity rates in the state go in the wrong direction.” Kelly Garcia, director of Iowa HHS, said. “Limiting the food advantages to buy only the food that we know that they are healthier is a step in the right direction for Iowans.”

According to Governor Reynolds, the waiver should help promote healthier food throughout the state. The waiver will come into force from January 1, 2026.
