I exchanged windows for the latest Steamos on my Legion Go S and I don't go back

The latest Stable Steamos update, version 3.7.8, has finally brought official Legion Go support, which means that the handheld is the first certified non-steam deck steamos device. There is a Steamos version of the Legion Go S in a few days, but this also means that the Windows version, which is already in the wild, should now also officially work with Steamos.

This latest version of the operating system also packs “improved support for other AMD handhelds (like the ROG Ally and Original Legion Go)”, although we tried it with a frame 13 -strix -point laptop that has the same internal as a handheld and it did not like it -we couldn’t get it.

I had no such problems with the Legion GO S. I was thrilled to use Valve’s operating system on the device since I found out that there would be compatibility in view of the miserable view of how it is annoying to use Windows on a handheld device. So I thought I would try it out and see how to run Steamos on it against running windows.

As soon as I used a dodgy external drive for the Steamos installation and was switched to one that works, the installation was quite smooth. Valve explains how the operating system is installed here under the section “Create / install / install steam”.

You download the recovery image, burn it onto a USB drive in Rufus and boat your Legion GO S. just remember that you first have to deactivate the safe boot in the Legion Go S -Bios (volume + single and sparkling button from switching off).

I also ensured that the start of USB was activated in the BIOS settings. Then I attached the USB drive and started the Pre-Bios screen and selected the USB drive from the start menu. That brought me to Steamos.

From there, the installation was easy. I selected the symbol that would delete the drive and install the operating system, and ran through the Steamos installation, contacted my WiFi and then in steam. The entire process took less than 30 minutes, although this naturally depends on your download speed.

When I was in there, I knew that things were official because the operating system distributed a little through the Legion Go S and what they do in Steamos. The guided tour even ends with “We hope you enjoy your Legion Go S”, which made me feel calm.

However, the recovery image you have installed is not the latest version 3.7.8 – it is 3.7.7. But an update waited for me as soon as I installed everything, and that brought me to 3.7.8. It wouldn’t let me do the update until I put the Legion inserted, so fair warning for it.

As soon as this was sorted, it was only left to adjust the TDP. This happens from the right steam settings overlay. I set this to 25 W because my tests were carried out under Windows in performance mode, which on average up to 25 W. tend to be up to about 25 W. (I found such a high TDP setting that is not really worth it during my original tests.)

As you can see, games can do a little better when the Legion Go S Steamos performs than with windows. This is probably due to the fact that less background bloated when the resources violate, since Steamos is a light Linux distribution-based Linux.

While the Black Myth did not show an increase without high scaling (probably because frame rate is longer in this demanding title), the installation of Steamos was installed by the FPS in cyberpunk by 23% and in Horizon Zero Dawn by 19%. Add to the mixture, which was a bit broadcast in the latter game, but in cyberpunk there was still an improvement of 31%with Steamos.

In practice, however, I will probably play games with a lower TDP than this 25 W. I will probably decide the 15 -w steam ceiling in which the steam deck runs comfortably to support the battery life and only increase for more demanding games if necessary.

Hopefully this will also help with the fans, because the only thing I have found so far have been given these fans in Legion Go s loud No matter which operating system I use. I noticed this especially when downloading games, strangely, because the fans seemed to step in overdrive (maybe the Wi-Fi card suffers at high temperatures).

In the Windows version there is an easy way to adapt fan curves, which helped me deal with this problem. It doesn’t seem as if this is the case with Steamos, although I hear that there is a way to use Dildy and install a plug-in.

I will take these small problems every day of the week about the general difficulty of windows on handheld. A simpler, lighter operating system, simple installations, great sleep/suspend functionality and I can now also confirm better performance. Nice stuff. It feels like the Legion Go S was being built.
