Gabrieli Pessanha will make her no-gi debut at the 2024 IBJJF No Gi World Championships

Gabrieli Pessanha has spent the last few years dominating the world of Gi competition, but now she has decided to make her No-Gi debut at the upcoming 2024 IBJJF No-Gi World Championships. Pessanha has won every single major Gi title multiple times, becoming a world champion. She is the only person to also win multiple double IBJJF Grand Slams, cementing her place in history at the young age of just 24. She is currently riding one of the most impressive victories. She has won 150 consecutive games in the last three years without suffering a single defeat.

Although Pessanha still has so many years of competition ahead of her in her athletic prime, she has already had a career that most competitors couldn’t match in a lifetime. Although she will likely continue winning major titles in the years to come, there is very little left for Pessanha to do in the gi side of the sport. That’s why their coach announced late last year that they would be spending some time preparing for a move to No Gi in 2024. This obviously led to speculation as to where and when she would make her debut, and it seemed like ADCC 2024 would be a likely option.

When she didn’t perform at the ADCC, it seemed like she had postponed her no-gi debut beyond this year. The 2024 IBJJF No-Gi World Championships was Gabrieli Pessanha’s last chance to make her no-gi debut this year, and with only a few days left until registration, it seemed like that opportunity would pass as well. However, she took the plunge at the last moment and Pessanha will now compete there in the super heavyweight division. She currently only has two opponents in the field, Mayara Moreira and her main threat Kendall Reusing, but registration is still open and that list could continue to grow.
