FC Barcelona-Espanyol: At least 13 people who drive into the crowd as a car outside the stadium. The police say it is “accidental”

At least 13 people were injured when a car, according to the local authorities, drove to a lot in front of a stadium in Spain in a soccer game between the big crosstown -rival FC Barcelona and Espanyol.

The Catalan police described the incident on Thursday as a “accidental collision” for CNN.

“The situation is under control and is by no means a risk for people in the sports facility,” said the police in a separate explanation on social media. According to Catalonia’s emergency services, 13 people were treated on X for injuries in one position.

“The injured people are treated by emergency services and the driver of the vehicle was arrested,” wrote the Catalan police in a successor shortly afterwards. “There is a great police presence in the area.”

The video from social media geolocated by CNN seems to show a white car that drives through a lot of people in a park next to the facility.

The emergency services said in a post on X that nine people had “minor injuries”, while the other four were “less than serious” conditions.

FC Barcelona finally won the match 2-0 and became champion for the 2024-25 season.

The game was interrupted with a red card for the Espanyol defender Leondro Cabrera, who made 17-year-old Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal in the last minutes after the match.

In a last moment of chaos, the stadium sprinklers were switched on when the Barcelona players celebrated their title.

The intensive rivalry between Barcelona and Espanyol extends almost a century and often overlaps Spanish politics. FC Barcelona is the preferred team for Catalan nationalists. Espanyol is often praised by the Spanish state.
