City councilor Schreyer suddenly dies; Colleagues under shock, says Mayor – Winnipeg Free Press

Winnipeg’s council members tumble after the death of a popular colleague who served more than a decade in the town hall.

Mayor Scott Gillingham terminated the sudden death of Elmwood-East Kildonan Coun. At a press conference on Wednesday morning, Jason Schreyer said that members of the council were shocked when they were informed on Tuesday evening.

The 57 -year -old Schreyer was first elected in 2014 together with Gillingham. He chose a strong and independent council member who was passionate and for his voters for affordability, the mayor said.

“He was a very talented person, and that’s why he will obviously be missed deeply. We will do everything we can to honor his inheritance,” Gillingham told reporters in the town hall.

“I always appreciated to work with him.”

Gillingham said that he did not know the cause of the death of Schreyer and added that he spoke by phone with the father of the late council member – the former prime minister and General Gouventer Ed Schreyer and extended his condolences on behalf of the city council.

“They are destroyed, maybe I’ll just leave it with it,” he said. “I offered support. We can do everything I can do from my office as a advice to support his family at this time.”

Schreyer leaves his 17 -year -old wife, two sons aged 16 and 19 and his parents.

Ed Schreyer said that the family still doesn’t know how his son died.

“He died at home late (Tuesday) tomorrow” Free press Wednesday evening. “I still don’t really know what happened. Everything that has been said is that it is necessary to carry out an autopsy (Thursday).”

Manitobas 16th Prime Minister and 22nd Governor of General Canada said he spoke to Jason early Tuesday.

“He certainly didn’t seem to be suppressed or disturbed … He was traveling with some close friends and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law and his wife late in the evening. I think they even had their 16-year-old son until almost 11 p.m.

Schreyer said he and his wife had two sons and two daughters, but Jason was the only one who followed his father in politics.

“I never twisted his arm a little,” he said. “But on the other hand, I made sure not to dissuade him. He decided to run in the 1993 national elections when he was only 26 years old. He ran and came a very respectable second when riding Selkirk-Interlake.”

The council members were visibly shaken when they gathered for a planned meeting on Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. Many were seen how they hugged and talked quietly. After an opening prayer, the mayor – the voice before emotions – announced that the meeting would be postponed until Friday.

Gillingham and other members of the council then gathered in the mayor’s office to share memories of their late colleagues, he said.

Schreyer was a close friend of many in the town hall, including the city councilors Ross Eadie, Russ Wyatt, Devi Sharma and Matt Allard, said Gillingham.

Schreyer won his first council mandate with 55 percent of the vote in a race against Thomas Steen, a one-Term city council and former Winnipeg Jets-player. He replicated this success during a election four years later and once again took 55 percent of the vote.

During the last civil elections, he won his third term in 2022 with 62 percent.

“I was grown up and inspired to increase the ability of politics and government to increase the human condition for reasons of human dignity, a sustainable environment and a balanced and sustainable economy,” Schreb wrote in response to a questionnaire that was published on the city’s 2022 election website.

He often mentioned construction and infrastructure costs as under his priorities as a city council. In recent times, he focused on strengthening nutritional security for his voters, said Gillingham.

“He would regularly talk about the effects of the inflation of the building cities at the expense of the city, and the point at which we would joke with him came,” said the mayor and smiled when he shared the memory with reporters.

“We would laugh, but his larger point was the cost of city services and public services and … He really wanted people to understand the reasons.”

Schreyer sat in the city’s constant political committee for property and development. He was also a member of the East Kildonan-Transcona Community Committee. Previously, he worked in the financial and water and waste committees.

Before he became a council member, Schreyer worked as a ministerial assistant of the NDP MLA Steve Ashton when he was responsible for infrastructure and transport in the provincial cabinet. He also worked with Elmwood NDP MLA Jim Maloway.

The former Elmwood NDP MP Leila Dance, who was defeated in the federal elections on Monday, said she saw Schreyer that night.

She said he looked healthy when he joined her, Eadie and a lot of supporters at the Junction 59 Roadhouse to observe the results of the survey results, she said.

“It only took my breath away when I heard it – I’m shocked,” said Dance. “He was so supportive during my campaign. He interviewed me during the day. At no time, I thought he should sit down or looked tired.

“In the end he hugged me and said: ‘Take a few days and call me and we’ll see what the next steps are.'”

She described Schreyer as an “all-round-large guy” and an “amazing community-oriented person”.

“There will be a big hole in the community,” she said.

Premier Wab Kinew expanded his condolences on Wednesday.

“He was a strong voice for North East Winnipeg. My heart goes to his whole family, friends and colleagues in this very difficult time,” said Kinew in an explanation after X.

The city council published a joint explanation in which Schreyer and grief were expressed in his loss of admiration. Some members also spoke separately.

“Our political inclinations were different, but it was just so gentle, friendly and thoughtful and respectful with which it was just a pleasure to work with it,” Coun. Janice Lukes told that Free press.

In a statement on Facebook, Coun. Cindy Gilroy described Schreyer as a quiet, thoughtful and committed politician.

Rating Brian Mayes also posted online and referred to Schreyer as a friend.

The last time a seated city council died, was in 2010 when Charleswood-Tuxedo Coun. Bill Clement succumbed to cancer. Former River Heights-Fort Garry Coun. Brenda Leipsic died of lung cancer in 2008.
