Forecaster: James Spann

DRY DAY AHEAD: Temperatures will be in the 30s to 40s this morning in Alabama; Look for a high in the 60s and partly sunny skies today. Clouds will begin to increase this afternoon ahead of a cold front and showers will develop this evening.

THANKSGIVING: A few strong thunderstorms are possible over north/central Alabama tomorrow morning directly ahead of the front; SPC maintains a low “marginal risk” of severe thunderstorms for approximately the southern two-thirds of the state.

The main window for the more severe storms over the northern half of Alabama will be from about 3:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. While there will be a limited amount of surface-based instability ahead of the front, the wind fields will not be particularly strong, and the best dynamic forcing will fade as the day progresses. However, where stronger storms can develop, strong, gusty winds and small hail are possible. The chance of an isolated, brief tornado is very small, but not zero.

The overall threat of severe thunderstorms is low for southern Alabama and showers there are expected to end by late morning or early afternoon. Rainfall amounts will be light across the state, generally under 1/4 inch.

We also note that temperatures will decrease throughout the day in northern and central counties; We’ll start at 60°C in the early hours, but drop to 40°C and 50°C around midday with a brisk northerly wind. Those of you in southeast Alabama will reach the 70s before the colder air arrives.

FRIDAY AND WEEKEND: The weather will be cold and dry, with mostly sunny days and fine nights. Highs will be in the 40s and 50s, with lows below freezing (20s and lower 30s) across the northern two-thirds of the state. It will be the coldest air so far this season.

NEXT WEEK: Cold, dry weather continues Monday and Tuesday; Some of the colder spots across northern Alabama could reach the upper teens, and a freeze is likely as far north as the Gulf Coast. Temperatures moderate somewhat in the second half of the week, with highs reaching lows of 60° on Friday. The week looks largely dry, although models indicate a few showers in the state’s northern counties on Friday.

IRON BOWL: The weather will be cold and dry Saturday in Tuscaloosa for this year’s Iron Bowl (Auburn in Alabama, kickoff at 2:30 p.m. CT). Skies will be mostly sunny and temperatures will drop from around 50 degrees at kickoff to around 40 degrees by the final whistle.

ON THIS DATE IN 1898: A powerful storm known as “Portland Gale” struck coastal New England on November 26 and 27, 1898. The storm formed when two low pressure systems merged off the coast of New Jersey and moved up the East Coast. This storm produced hurricane-force winds in Nantucket and sank more than 150 boats and ships.

ON THIS DATE IN 2019: Two small EF-0 tornadoes touched down in southern Alabama. One was northeast of Brundidge, the other near Clio.
