Benjamin Bratt from “Andor” takes over an iconic “Star Wars” role

This story contains spoilers for episodes 7-9 of Andor Season two.

Andor I just went there. In the past few weeks, Tony Gilroy-created Diego Luna-Front has been star Wars The second season of the series increased the tension when the empire slowly and steadily gains foot on Ghorman. The wealthy planet houses a mineral called Kalkite, which is of crucial importance for the construction of the Death Star. For several years, the empire has sown a misinformation campaign in which pockets of the rebellion were able to form in order to finally justify the penetration into the planets (and to roam them from its resources). This week, the powder barrel finally ignited, which led to a difficult sequence in which imperial armed forces celebrate a genocide against the Ghormazer, with Andor (Luna).

After one of the most intense and stressful moments in the history of the franchise, it is comforting to see a well -known face. Episode Nine, which takes place after the attack, opens the Organa deposit, the father of Princess Leia and the Stalwart figure of the rebellion. star Wars The fans will undoubtedly remember Jimmy Smits’ appearances as an organization about a handful of projects, including George Lucas Prequels and Rogue one. Due to the planning problems, however, no processes could return what Gilroy hits the veteran actor Benjamin Bratt for the role. Bratt briefly appeared in episode 6 in a temporary appearance, but plays a much more active role in episode nine, the last of the three episodes, the last night on Disney+fall. His calming presence and leadership enables Senator Mon Mothma (Genevievieve O’reilly) to face the emperor in the Galactic Senate before Andor raced in order to run the pockets of the rebel armor soon.

Before this episode block, GQ jumped on the phone with Bratt to talk about talking about the shoes of smits, his story with the world of star WarsThe use of the rebellion and much more.

GQ: When did you turn to get into the second season for the first time?

Benjamin Bratt: It was a little more than two years before pandemic, during the pandemic, in front of the writer. I got a call that Tony Gilroy wanted to have a conversation with me Andor. At that point I hadn’t seen any consequences. As a big fan of Tony, my immediate imagination was: “laughs) He has probably stimulated some of my independent film work and wants me to be on board as an intergalactic Emiliano Zapata (laughs) and lead a small resistance fraction on a foreign planet. “In the first two minutes after our conversation, he immediately ran this imagination.

He said, “We have that. We have that in the form of Cassian Andor, so that’s a little more discrepanced.” If you want. He explained that Jimmy was not available to come back. Although it didn’t have much to do, the role was very important; (Organa) naturally has a very important place in the canon when one of the well -known architects of the rebellion (and) was important to do it right and would I be interested? That started the first conversation, and for me it was an immediate yes. For all the obvious reasons, I didn’t really have to think too much about it. I mean, mainly Andor was a famous spinoff of the star Wars Universum, all players involved, obviously led by Diego and everyone else. But as a long -time fan of Jimmy, I thought it would be a unique challenge to arrive and both to honor what he originally done with the character and try to do something unique with him from my own perspective and still remain true to what the Bail Organa is to be expected.
