Boston, MA – Dr. Atul Gawande, surgeon, author and former American global health officer, provided a sobering assessment of the equipment of the US Agency for International Development (USA) by the current White House on April 28 and asked the students and the faculty to commit the work of science and medicine during a discussion on April 28.

Gawande, which is connected to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and at which Harvard Th Chan School of Public Health and the Harvard Medical School had passed the faculties in 2021 after he was appointed Head of USAAIAID office for global health by President Joe Biden.

In an interview with Marcia de Castro, Andelot professor of demography on the Chan School, said Gawande, the removal of almost all USAID employees by the Trump government and the termination of more than 85 percent of their programs caused “devastating” damage -both the global health results and the role of the United States as global health leaders, Harvard Gazette reported.

When he remembered his time at USAID, Gawande said that the agency, who worked with half of the budget of a typical Boston hospital, had built a 50-country network to monitor fatal diseases such as Ebola and bird flu faster than ever, and several other projects that were more cost-effective than the public was detailed.

“What I now know three months when I left my role at USAID is that USAID cannot be restored to what it was, but it is not too late to save our health and science infrastructure and our talent,” he said.

With regard to the freezing of federal financing for certain Harvard research programs, Gawande found that Ariadne Labs, a research center that he founded in 2012 with Harvard and Brigham and women, was one of those affected. The work of the center includes studies on surgical security, the health of mothers and the delivery of basic care.

Despite the challenges, Gawande expressed careful optimism, the Harvard Gazette reported and quoted him: “As an American, I am quite unsure whether America will be part of the leadership and part of the solution shortly. But you and your specialist knowledge are needed independently of one another.”
