Aryna Sabalenka defeats Coco Gauff to win over record title Madrid Open

World No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka, won a record title Madrid Open on Saturday and defeated the Coco Gauff of the USA 6: 3, 7: 6 (3) in the final.

With the victory, Sabalenka Petra Kvitova’s record of three titles in Madrid reached and secured her 20th career title. After a dominant start to the year, in which she reached four consecutive finals and won 31 games, she also consolidated her place as No. 1 in the world.

“It is always incredible to return to Madrid, I love this place, I am always looking forward to playing in front of you all,” said Sabalenka in her interview on the pitch and thanked the crowd for her support.

She enjoyed an almost perfect start to the match, her mighty ground lines overwhelmed Gauff when she won 17 consecutive points early in order to ultimately lead unassailable first lead.

Although Gauff settled in the game, she could not recover this deficit and had to start her challenge in the second set. A perfectly executed pass shot made sure that Gauff Sabalenka broke at the beginning of the second time and finally served for the set at 5: 4 to reach the match.

Sabalenka raced to a 0: 40 lead, but Gauff clung, saved a breakpoint and the closest slipped from Sabalenka’s hands when she ran around the Court.

That was an opening and she accepted it, technical a setpoint, but Sabalenka once again wiped out every chance and broke back later. Despite the best efforts of Gauff, the set went to a tiebreak that Sabalenka won and ended the match.
