“Albania can become a member of the EU before 2030”

The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, said on Thursday that Albania could join the European Union before the end of the decade.

“If Albania continues to provide the same price, it is quite possible to join the European Union before 2030,” said Costa at a joint press conference with the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama in Tirana. “But it all depends on whether they continue on the same path or not.”

The country via Adriatic has been ruled by Rama since 2013, who recently secured a fourth term in the parliamentary elections with his socialist party (PS).

During the election campaign, Rama promised the Albanians EU accession until 2030.

Albania has been an official candidate for EU membership since 2014, and negotiations have been ongoing since 2022. The country has been a member of NATO since 2009.

Observers have recently found certain progress in combating corruption.
