It has been more than 20 years since Frank Gallagher and his chaotic family shamelessly adorned our screens in the HIT TV show by Channel 4 for the first time. The granular comedy drama, which plays on the fictional chatworth council estate in Manchester, was founded by Paul Abbott and ended his course in 2013.

The success of the show led to an American adaptation, Shameless, which made his debut in 2011. William H. Macy showed the dysfunctional father figure Frank.

The US version turned out to be just as popular and became the longest running script series in the history of the network before it ended in 2021.

The original UK series, which was premiered in January 2004, was filmed on the corner of Wenlock Way and Clowes Street in West Gorton and in the Pie Factory Studios in Salford. From the fifth series, production switched to a specially built set on the Rundhorn Industrial Estate in Wythenshawen, the men previously reported.

The exceptional script of the show produced a variety of memorable lines, many of which were delivered by Frank Gallagher and then referred to as “Francisms”. These often profory -charged lines were professionally transmitted by actor David Threlall, one of the most remarkable beings: one of the most remarkable beings:

“People say the children are the future; teach them well and let them lead them. But after they had eight of them, they realize that this is a load of ********. Darwin had the right idea; just let the ****** to protect themselves.

“What if I am not an astronaut or the prime minister or a soccer player? I’m Vernon Francis Gallagher. I came, I saw, I drank the *******.

“Son, if you have them, little babies, you love them. Even if they are real Mingers. I mean when I was born he looked like David gest.”

(To Liam) “I promise that I will always be there for you. As long as I collect your advantages.

“Make poverty story. Now cheaper drugs.”

The original property in Gorton, where the show was first shot, became known locally as a “shameless property”. The first four series showed the Obsen of the Human Gallagher family against the background of neglect, abandoned sofas and social deprivation.

Most of the West Gorton residents quickly adopted the Gallagher family and other characters than local heroes. They had mass views in the Wellington Pub (now also gone) on which the fictional restaurant is based on jockey and welcomed the line -up during the filming.

Programmers also had difficulties. Teenager yobs had to receive anti-social behavioral orders in order to prevent them from continuously aiming at the line-up and crew while filming on the property.

In 2011, the Manchester Evening News received access to the new, earmarked replica in Wythenshawen, where the show was shot until the end of 2013. Our photographer has captured the shops, houses, streets and perhaps most importantly in the jockey pub at which many classic moments would take place.

After the last series from Shameless ended, the standard Wythenshau set has been demolished for about seven years. At that time, the demolition had already started on the Gorton Estate, where the show was originally shot, including the jockey (Wellington Inn) Pub.

After the demolition of the estate in West Gorton, a public/private investment program of 100 million GBP turned the once structural ‘shameless discount’, from which the people wanted to go where people were on queue. The rows of dilapidated and ruled maisonettes, from which the “Chatsworth estate” consisted of the show, have now disappeared, replaced by massive red brick houses.
