New England backups that bounced off the US Open Cup

The Chicago Fire brought an MLS-based line-up to the Providence College on Tuesday evening and left a 3-1 win over the revolution in the US Open Cup, but had to fight harder when many expected to reach the last eight o’clock of the domestic co-competition.

In the second half, Hugo Cuypers and Philip Zinckernagel scored his own goal in 38th minute, which was described to New England Eric Klein, but a revolution that was loaded with the players from his reserve squad kept the fire from third place for most of the night.

The starting line-up of Chicago comprised five of his 4-1 MLS victory in Charlotte on Saturday, including Cuypers, whose eight goals are scored in the third highest league. In the meantime, Caleb Porter used 11 players of Revolution II at night -including the Somerville Teenager Cristiano Oliveira, who started after his win in New England’s 16th victory at Rhode Island FC, and only four with MLS experience this season.

“We had a number of people who played in the first Open Cup game, Sands, Luca Langoni, with injuries. Luis Diaz, Maxi Urruti and (Tomás) Chanancalay, all of which were stolen a little.

Despite the line-up, the Revolution Chicago, 9-4, exceeded content to avert the possession from the target. The fire had no shot on the goal when Cuypers gave a distracted cross in the 69th minute, Alex Bono, and built a lead with her only real attack in the first half.

Wing player Jonathan Bamba stormed from Bonos to the right of a give-and-go to the area, where he hit a cross that hit the small leg out, and sent the goalkeeper past almost post.

Zinckernagel, a replacement in the second half, which, like Bamba, achieved in Charlotte, began a rush from the Chicago end and ended it in the 79th minute. He worked three defenders for a right -footed finish near the penalty point.

New England broke the shutout with its own goal with an 89th minute, a cross from Providence Alum Geford Diarbian, which was rejected in Justin Reynolds by Chicago.

“You played against an MLS team today, a good MLS team that has good players. I thought they looked good in the game,” said Porter and praised his group. “The fans should be disappointed that we do not progress, just like me, but they should be very excited about these young players that they had the opportunity to play and take steps forward in these two games.”

Porter also offered a handful of injury updates, especially that striker Leo Campana’s tendon at San Jose is a “class” on Saturday, which is least serious.

“These are good news. It will probably take a few weeks,” said Porter, to visit Cincinnatis visit to Foxborough on June 14th to get Campana back, who missed three games with a different sense problem at the beginning of this season.

Luca Langoni, who injured his quad on Rhode Island on May 7, is “further removed,” said Porter, but the team expects both Chalancalay (groin area), Urruti (leg) and Diaz.
