Mets get the worst value in the baseball from this 78 million dollar contract

In the first year of his four-year 78 million dollar deal, Starling Marte was more worth the money that the New York Mets gave him. He was an all-star and a key piece in a team that won 101 regular season games. Unfortunately, it tried to stay on the field both in 2023 and in 2024, and in 2025 his contract has never looked worse.

It is easy to push this aside, since the METs are currently leading the NL east with a record of 28-16, but this does not deny a simple fact. His contract currently looks like one of the worst in baseball. The only thing it really saves is that it works after the year.

Based on how he played, he couldn’t even take that long.

Starling Marte contract is an albatross that is difficult to ignore

Marte became a part-time DH from an all-star in 2022 this season. This season he deserves $ 20.75 million in order to be largely a DH on a short train.

Even if Marte appeared at all-star level, no DH is worth more than $ 20 million on the short side of a train in one season. One who plays as bad as Marte only makes the deal worse.

The 36-year-old lowers .203/.317/.319 with two homes and 12 RBI in 27 games and 82 record appearances this season. What makes things worse is that he only beats 0.182 against left -handers with an operating room of 0.652. This type of production for someone who only played four inner rings in the field this season would still be bad, but for someone who earns over $ 20 million terrible.

Perhaps the worst part of Martees has to do with his best feature. He is the active leader with 455 stolen bases throughout his career, but he only has three steals this season and, according to Baseball Savant, in the 11th percentile in sprint speed. He has become someone from a burner who should consider the Mets for late in games.

The METS will give him every chance to produce in view of his contract and presence of the clubhouse, but at some point a team that tries to win a World Series is difficult to justify it, give him a season, especially in the middle of the order of how you did. Hopefully the Mets can get something From Marte this season to look at the contract at least a little better.
