Munguia promises Surace Ko, says he has become cocky

Jaime Munguia suffered the most important shock of the year in 2024 when he was annoyed by the unknown Frenchman Bruno Surace with a one-punch clasp.

What was supposed to be a successful return home in Tijuana, Mexico, developed into a turbulent experience when Munguia made the second loss of his career only seven months after spirited efforts and defeat against Canelo Alvarez.

Munguia (44-2, 35 KOS) must now record the parts on May 3 if he faces Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOS) in a reserve in Riad, Saudi Arabia as Co-Main event for the undisputed super in the middle weight between Alvarez and William Scull. The event is broadcast live on DAZN PPV.

In order to prepare for this occasion, Munguia met with Team Canelo and handed over the coaching keys to his career to Alvarez ‘lifelong confidants and coach Eddy Reynoso.

“The change in the training camp was really good. I am very satisfied with Eddy,” said Munguia in an interview about a Spanish translator. “They were really good for me and my surroundings. We work on almost everything on defense and offensive. Together with one of the best fighters in the world, they work harder.

It was generally expected that Surace for Munguia was nothing more than a winter mood. The struggle seemed to follow the exact script early when Munguia dropped the massive outsider and the professional middleweight with a brutal left hook in the second round. Munguia controlled the action from there until everything changed in the sixth when Surace decorated a thundering right hand that Munguia’s night ended. The light Surace only connected 19 blows all night, but the last one demonstrated the old saying that everyone has the chance of a puncher.

“I won the fight and was a little relaxed and distracted,” said Munguia. “I thought I had a really good chance to turn it off in the second round, and I think I became a bit confident, but not in a bad way. I wanted to give people a show, thank you and thank you. But I was caught with the blow. In retirement when I have the chance to switch it off, I will do it.

With a warm laugh, Munguia said that he couldn’t remember whether Surace’s hell was the most difficult with whom he had ever been hit.

“It was not easy (mentally, emotional, psychologically),” said Munguia. “It was somehow difficult. But I have to find out the positive from every situation and with the work I did daily, I am confident that I will win the reserves.

“I think I have to do what I did in the first rounds, work hard and concentrate. I am sure that the knockout will come. The best thing is still coming. We will overcome this and come back more than ever.”
