Alan Haller as sports director of Michigan State

Alan Haller is Michigan’s sports director of the State of Michigan.

The Free Press first reported and the university later confirmed that Haller was relieved of his tasks and ended the term of the 54-year-old Lansing and former Spartan and NFL soccer players after 3½ years.

“I am grateful for Alan’s leadership since I joined the university and appreciate the success that our programs have seen under his leadership,” said President Kevin M. Guskiewicz in a statement. “He is deeply committed to this university and has managed honesty and integrity.”

Haler’s last day will be on May 11th, and Guskiewicz said that the university is planning to start a new sports director in the coming weeks. Jen Smith, deputy sports director of the MSU and senior women’s administrator/compliance, and the basketball coach of the men, Tom Izzo, will in the meantime act as a co-interim sports director, the school said in its publication.

“This is a crucial time for College Athletics, in which innovation, effective communication and commitment to the community are more important than ever,” said Guskiewicz. “Our next sports director will lead one of the country’s famous sports programs, in which 23 Varsity Sports, a passionate fan base, a long heritage of academic and sporting excellence and, above all, an ambitious future.”

Haller did not immediately answer a comment.

Haller became the 20th sports director of the MSU on September 1, 2021 and replaced Bill Beekman. His five -year contract expires on September 1, 2026; According to a source, the Buy -out negotiations have not yet been completed with knowledge of the situation.

Haller completed JW Sexton High in Lansing and played football for Spartans and coach George Perles from 1988-91. He spent 13 years in the MSU police department from July 1997 after he had withdrawn from football and finally promoted Lieutenant before entering the sports department in July 2010.

Haller started as Associate Athletic Director, was promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director in 2015 and added to his title in 2017. Beekman promoted him to his deputy as deputy sports director in 2019.

When Athletic Director became a pandemic, Haller took over the management of College sports into the era of the name, image and similarity (Nile). The scope and scope of changes have dramatically changed the landscape and roles of administrators and donors, and the restructuring remains an ongoing procedure that is before federal courts.

Haller is an essential part of the setting process for the last three football coaches of the MSU. He finally fired Mel Tucker in 2023 and commissioned Jonathan Smith as a replacement. In the past few months, Haller has also worked to bring a new Olympic sports arena to school.

Haller acquired a conclusion in the criminal judiciary of MSU and his master in Human Resources from Central Michigan. His only time outside the Lansing area came when he played in the NFL with Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Carolina from 1992 to 1995.
