Sidi Gueye, international basketball perspective, joins Arizona

Sidi Gueye, one of the best international prospects in his age group, said on Wednesday that he had committed to Arizona.

“Coach (Tommy) Lloyd is one of the best coaches in college and has already trained many international players,” Gueye told ESPN. “He felt comfortable and showed me how I can improve and produce myself in his system.”

Senegal’s 6-foot 11th striker made its debut by Euroleague and Spanic ACB League for Real Madrid in October, just a few weeks after 17 years. Next season he will probably be one of the youngest players in college basketball.

“Playing for Real Madrid was incredible,” said Gueye. “You are a great organization and helped me so much in my basketball development. It is exciting to go to the USA for college, and so many other top players come to overlook what makes the decision easier. I continued to get better, and the college seemed to be a good next step.”

Gueye is an elite defender who is often commissioned to protect smaller players on the scope. He has a 7-foot 4-wingspan, which gives it considerable versatility at this end of the soil, and he was a productive shot blocker at a European junior level.

Gueye was born in Senegal and said he started playing basketball at the age of 12 in 2019. He arrived in Spain in November 2021 after his youth coach had helped him connect with Real Madrid.
